Inspiration: Dora, the blue laced red Wyandotte, was named after Nymphadora. She had some pretty gorgeous feather patterns on there, and was always a little quirky. She was one of our larger birds, and laid a nice big brown egg. She hung out with Minnie alot and loved strawberries!

Inspiration: Storm, the Olive Egger, was the most flighty of all the birds. We could never catch this girl, and she was definitely not much of a people person. We added her to our flock as a pullet in August of 2016. She got along great with Nox, and they could always be found together scratching around the yard. Storm had some super special olive colored eggs, since she was a cross between an Easter Egger (blue/green), and a Maran (deep red/brown). Her feathers were the most beautiful shade of gray with some hints of green and blue to them.

Inspiration: Bells, the Barred Rock (named after Bellatrix) was our first chicken to lay an egg! The photo above shows her on that very special day :) She was a lovely girl… very excited and happy to be around all of us. The kiddos didn’t get to know her very well, since she was also the first chicken to die out of our flock (New Years Day 2014). She laid super consistantly, and was the closest with Lily. She also kept watch over the flock and as she got older, had more white showing through and less black.

Colors: Her colorway is just that, with a speckling of slate, gray, black and a bit of mocha.

Inspiration: Ruby, the Cuckoo Maran, was named after Rubius Hagrid. She was one of my favorites, and loved to be pet and held. Out of all of our chickens, she had the sweetest and softest chirp. This girl is a bit famous too, as she made it to Clara’s school, and also has her picture in a magazine (By Hand!). She lived to the ripe old age of 8.5. Ruby was also our chicken that seemed to have 9 lives. We thought we were going to loose her a number of times due to various things, but she always pulled through. Though her feather colors aren’t super special, her eggs were a brick red color. We were even lucky to have some of her eggs again this Spring and Summer.

Colors: Her colorway is charcoal with speckles of black.

Inspiration: Nox was one of the birds we added to the flock in August of 2016! It was quite different for us, since we didn’t raise her from a 2 day old chick. She never became a people person, but was always very curious. We loved her dark, dark brownish red eggs and her spunk for bugs. Even though she was pretty much black all over, her feathers had tons of deep teal in there as well. She went to live on a farm nearby with some new chicken friends!

Colors: Her colorway started with black and then is speckled and overdyed with forest, leaf and aqua.

Inspiration: Minnie, the Speckled Sussex, was named after Minerva. Minerva just seemed a bit too fancy for her, so her nickname was just Minnie :) She was a quiet girl, and was often just hanging out on her own, or with her other shy sister Dora. She wasn’t much for being held, but always seemed pretty content. She loved mealworms and oatmeal most of all. As she got older, her feathers became more and more gorgeous, with the shades of red, brown, white speckles, and deep blue/greens.

Colors: Her colorway is a blend of brownish reds, chocolate and brick with speckles of chocolate, gold, forest and charcoal.

Inspiration: Lily was our queen bee, and one of my most favorite girls. She kept the flock in order in the most gentle way possible. She laid beautiful green/blue eggs. She loved to sit on your shoulder and lap and would do anything for yogurt :)

Inspiration: Molly, the Buff Orpington was such a wonderful bird. She would have been a natural mother and loved Clara to pieces. She was one of our largest chickens, and laid large lighter brown eggs. She loved food in general and would never turn down a treat from the garden. She also did a great job keeping tabs on any danger nearby. She was often on lookout and would be one of the first to do the warning call.

Inspiration: Luna was a sweet girl, but much less of a lap bird. She was one of our harder birds to catch! She fell in the middle of the pecking order, and loved grapes… She was not as much of a fan of the other animals in the house. after having a run-in with Kali the cat :) Her eggs were a beautiful blue/green (they leaned more blue than Lily’s eggs). Though she was white, she always had some colorful tints to her feathers. And, having a bit of spunk, we felt like she deserved some colorful flecks in there.
